ABOUT THE FOUNDER:
Zuzzie Kapas is a San Diego-based interdisciplinary artist working across visual art, movement, and experiential practice. Her work explores the relationship between body, environment, and perception, drawing from her backgrounds in behavioral neuroscience, somatic integration, movement, and the arts. At the center of her practice is a curiosity about how we experience ourselves and the world, and how our histories, environments, and sensory capacities shape what we perceive in any given moment.
Zuzzie approaches artistic practice as a space for exploration. She is interested in the present moment of experience: what we notice, what we sense, how we perceive, and the many ways a body can encounter and make meaning of the world. Her work creates conditions for curiosity, self-knowledge, connection, and wonder.
Movement has been a central part of Zuzzie’s practice for more than 15 years. She has facilitated movement-based workshops and retreats, including nature-based and eco-somatic experiences incorporating improvisational dance, sensory exploration, and visual arts.
She also spent five years working in clinical settings, where she developed and implemented somatic and expressive arts programs across treatment centers. These experiences gave her a deep understanding of embodied experience while also shaping her desire to explore these ideas outside of a clinical framework and within the generative possibilities of art.
Today, Zuzzie is particularly interested in translating this inquiry into immersive and experiential environments, including art exhibitions and participatory spaces. Through movement, visual art, sound, sensory elements, nature, and spatial experience, she explores how an environment can invite people to slow down, become more present, and encounter their own perception in new ways. She is interested in creating spaces that give people the conditions to discover something for themselves.
Alongside her artistic practice, Zuzzie works within San Diego’s arts and culture sector in business administration, project management, exhibitions, and community engagement. Her organizational work gives her the opportunity to support the structures and collaborations that allow creative projects to thrive, while continually informing her own exploration of how art can create meaningful experiences and connection.
